Rhodos Will Always Remind me of Capt. Steele

As the Rhodo's make their show, I am reminded of a visit last year, to Captain Steele's. His daughter drove myself and two young B.C. plantswomen, up up and up the rough and rugged road behind his nursery in Rose Bay, N.S. The woodland was alight with a bazillion beautiful blooms; the beauty of this, I will never forget....and I can't help but believe Dick's spirit lives there.

We were gifted that day, with some of those blooms. I don't think I will ever look at a Rhododendron without thinking of him! He was a master hybridizer and a fine man.

  1. He was, indeed, a genius and a gentleman. I have 'Nancy Steele' (formerly Bayport Yellow) safely home from Yarmouth and will plant it tomorrow. Everytime I look at a rhodo I smile and smile and think of him. Dick's spirit lives in every plant he ever worked with, I think.

  2. Hi Bren. Thanks for visiting my blog which, in turn, led me to your blog. It is fascinating and with lovely photos.

Although I have travelled around Canada quite a bit, I don't know the Eastern seaboard at all so look forward to learning more about it.

Please do a post on the local music as, again, I didn't know there was any! Love traditional English stuff so a Canadian twist would be good. I only know of the McGarrigle sisters who, I assume, are Quebecois.

  3. One of the McGarrigle sisters just passed away, sadly. Did you know?

I'll add a few more music favs to my profile in a few days so have a look then.(hopefully I won't forget))) I grew up on Cape Breton Island and so the music there is the music I cherish the most.

  4. No, I hadn't heard that - they aren't that well known here in the UK. How sad.

I shall look forward to hearing some Cape Breton music one day.
